Intended purpose
Rib shear is intended for use by thoracic and orthopaedic surgeons to cut through ribs during thoracotomy and rib resection procedures. The shear is applied to costal bone and costal cartilage within the thoracic operative field. The compound action lever design provides sufficient mechanical force to section costal bone without excessive operator effort. The device is reusable and requires validated decontamination and sterilisation between uses.
